Campbell Escapes the Second
Ottawa scored first, but a 5-2-3 double play kept the inning from getting away.
Seeing Yohanse Morel for the second time in the series after the Ottawa starter opened game two with 2.0 scoreless innings, the Mississippi offense continued to be stifled by the right-hander early as the Mud Monsters were retired in order in the top of the first.
Campbell took the mound for Mississippi coming off his previous start at Trustmark Park against the Washington Wild Things in which he struck out a season-high eight batters.
The southpaw needed just seven pitches to retire the Titans in order in the bottom of the first.
Mississippi picked up its first baserunner after Travis Holt was hit by a pitch from Morel in the top of the second, but the Mud Monsters were held scoreless.
Ottawa led off the bottom half with back-to-back singles by Rainer Nuñez and Caleb Burr before Myles Smith doubled home Nuñez to open the scoring and give the Titans a 1-0 lead.
A walk to Thomas Ferroggiaro loaded the bases, but Mitsuki Fukuda grounded into a clutch inning-ending double play.
Holt fielded the ball at third and threw home to Tevis Payne II, who fired to first baseman AJ Fritz to complete the twin killing and allow Campbell to escape having surrendered only one run.
Five in the Third
Mississippi flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead.
Just as they did in game two, the Titans pulled Morel as the top of the third arrived and turned to their bullpen with right-hander Michael Vilchez.
Mississippi immediately found success against the Ottawa reliever.
Trey Bridges drew a leadoff walk before Joshua Shelly singled to put two Mud Monsters aboard.
Brayland Skinner followed with an RBI single to score Bridges and tie the game at 1-1 while extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
Booker then singled to load the bases.
With Shelly at third, Fritz struck out on a pitch that got away from Fukuda, allowing Shelly to race home and give the Mud Monsters their first lead at 2-1.
With one out, Larry followed with an RBI groundout to score Skinner and increase the Mississippi advantage to 3-1.
Paz then ripped his second triple of the series to bring home Booker and make it 4-1.
Holt capped the offensive outburst with an RBI single to score Paz, completing a five-run third inning and giving Mississippi a 5-1 advantage.
Paz Cuts Down a Run
Ottawa threatened again, but the right fielder delivered from the outfield.
Ottawa put traffic on the basepaths in the bottom of the third after Jackie Urbaez reached on an error before Campbell issued a one-out walk.
Nuñez followed with his second hit of the evening, serving a ball the opposite way into right field.
Urbaez attempted to score from second on the play, but Paz fired a throw home to Payne II, who applied the tag for the second out.
Campbell followed with his first strikeout of the evening to end the inning and keep Mississippi’s advantage at 5-1.
Dominic Puccetti emerged from the Ottawa bullpen to replace Vilchez in the top of the fourth and retired the side in order.
Campbell did the same in the bottom half, sitting down the Titans 1-2-3 for the second time in his outing.
Amani Goes Yard
Larry’s first home run in teal gave Mississippi another run of breathing room.
Puccetti remained on the mound in the top of the fifth and retired the first two batters before Larry stepped to the plate.
The Mississippi infielder rocked an offering from the southpaw over the left-field wall for his first home run as a Mud Monster and eighth of the season, extending the advantage to 6-1.
Campbell tossed three consecutive scoreless innings following Ottawa’s run in the second, but the Titans found success against the southpaw in the bottom of the sixth.
Smith drew a two-out walk before Stokely singled to join him on the basepaths.
Ferroggiaro followed with his first hit of the evening to plate Smith and make it a 6-2 ballgame.
A single by pinch-hitter Michael Fuhrman loaded the bases, but Campbell came back to strike out Urbaez for his fourth strikeout and the final out of the inning.
Three RBIs for Larry
Mississippi restored its five-run lead in the seventh.
Mississippi faced the fourth different Ottawa pitcher in the top of the seventh as Heitor Tokar took the mound.
Skinner greeted the right-hander with a leadoff double for his second hit of the evening, marking his 36th multi-hit game of the season.
One batter later with one out, Fritz singled to put runners on the corners.
Larry then collected his third RBI of the evening with an infield single to score Skinner and restore Mississippi’s five-run advantage at 7-2.
The Mud Monsters turned to their bullpen in the bottom of the seventh with Hunter Belton entering in relief.
Campbell finished his evening with a quality start, going 6.0 innings while allowing two runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four.
No Way, Brayland
Skinner supplied the defense as Belton took over.
Belton struck out the first batter he faced before AJ Wright sent a ball deep into center field that Skinner corralled with a circus catch for the second out.
With two outs, Belton surrendered back-to-back singles before a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position.
The right-hander recovered to record the final out and post a scoreless seventh.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Shelly singled for his second hit of the evening before Skinner collected his third to put two runners aboard.
Tokar escaped without allowing either runner to score.
Belton continued his outing in the bottom of the eighth and followed his first scoreless frame with another, sending Mississippi to the ninth with a 7-2 advantage.
Belton Slams the Door
Ottawa made the ninth interesting. Belton made sure it ended there.
Christian Scafidi became the fifth pitcher used by Ottawa in the top of the ninth and retired the Mud Monsters in order.
Three outs away from securing their second victory of the series, Mississippi kept Belton on the mound for the bottom half.
Belton walked Urbaez to begin the inning before recording the first out.
AJ Wright followed with a double to put both himself and Urbaez in scoring position.
Nuñez then collected his fourth hit of the evening, a two-run single that scored both runners and trimmed Mississippi’s advantage to 7-4.
A flyout to right followed for the second out, putting the Mud Monsters one out away.
Smith kept Ottawa alive with a single before Stokely drove home Nuñez with another base hit to suddenly make it a 7-5 ballgame.
With the tying runs aboard, Ottawa called upon pinch-hitter Taylor Wright.
Belton regrouped and struck out Wright for the final out, locking down the save and securing Mississippi’s second victory in Canada with a 7-5 final.

About the Mississippi Mud Monsters
Baseball Lives Here. It Just Got a Little Weirder.
The Mississippi Mud Monsters are a professional baseball team based in Pearl, Mississippi, competing in the Frontier League. Built in the mud and rooted in Mississippi, the Mud Monsters believe baseball should be unapologetically fun, a little weird, wildly welcoming, and deeply tied to the place it calls home. Real baseball. Real people. This is swamp-built, Mississippi-made baseball, where the vibes matter just as much as the final score.
