After Mississippi claimed its first victory against Washington this season Thursday night, Brian Williams took the hill looking to make it two in a row while wearing special Star Wars themed jerseys for Star Wars Night.

The last time the right-hander out of Bryan, Texas faced the Wild Things at EQT Park on June 16, Williams matched former Mud Monsters starter Preston Johnson and Luis Devers for the most strikeouts by a Mississippi starter this season with 10.

Williams received help from an outstanding catch at the center-field wall against the first batter of the game. Anthony Brocato sent a ball to one of the deepest parts of the park before Brayland Skinner ran it down and crashed into the wall to make the catch.

Kyle Edwards picked up the first hit of the game with a one-out single and moved to second on a groundout, but Williams escaped the inning unscathed.

Now working with a lead, Williams tossed a 1-2-3 top of the third, picking up his first strikeout and holding Washington scoreless for a third consecutive inning.

After the Mississippi offense was held scoreless by Armstrong III in the bottom of the third, Washington found success against Williams in the fourth.

The right-hander struck out Edwards for his second of the day and the first out of the inning before back-to-back walks to Antonio Monroy and Andrew Czech put two Washington baserunners aboard.

Wagner Lagrange singled to score Monroy for Washington’s first run of the evening.

Cole Fowler followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2, and the Wild Things were just getting started.

With Lagrange at third and Fowler at second, Caleb Ketchup lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home a third run and put Washington in front, 3-2.

Now with two outs and a runner still at second, Connor Peek singled to score Fowler and make it 4-2.

Peek moved into scoring position after stealing second before Isaias Quiroz singled to bring home the fifth and final run of the inning and extend Washington’s advantage to 5-2.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Washington once again went to its bullpen, bringing in left-hander Colt Anderson.

Skinner grounded one softly to shortstop and beat the play for an infield single.

A groundout by Kyle Booker moved Skinner to second, but Mississippi stranded him there.

Williams continued his outing into the top of the sixth but, after surrendering a leadoff single to Peek, Mississippi turned to left-hander John Walsh out of the bullpen.

Quiroz dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Peek to second while Walsh recorded the first out.

The southpaw kept the inherited runner from scoring and tossed a scoreless frame to send the game to the bottom of the sixth.

Williams finished his outing after five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four.

In the bottom of the frame, Larry doubled with one out to spark a Mississippi rally before a wild pitch pushed him to third.

The next batter, Paz, grounded a ball to second that Monroy could not come up with, allowing Paz to reach and Larry to score to make it a two-run ballgame at 5-3.

Mississippi answered with a run in the bottom half after Booker picked up his first hit of the evening with a one-out single.

A passed ball moved Booker to second before Fritz singled him home to make it 11-4 Washington.

After rebounding with a scoreless top of the eighth, Walsh remained on the mound for the ninth.

The southpaw allowed runners to reach the corners but kept Washington scoreless and sent the game to the bottom of the ninth for Mississippi’s final opportunity.

Despite a one-out single by Trey Bridges, who entered as a defensive replacement for Skinner, and a two-out walk by Tevis Payne II, the force out, instead of the Force, was with Washington as reliever Mack Anglin closed the door on an 11-4 Wild Things victory.
