After the Boomers secured the series with a rout of the Mud Monsters Saturday evening, Mississippi sent Julian Minaya to the hill for his first Frontier League start looking to avoid the sweep.

Having spent his entire professional career thus far in the Atlantic League with the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars in 2025 and Long Island Ducks in 2026, Minaya entered Sunday having made 27 professional starts.

The right-hander made his Mississippi debut the same day he was acquired from the Ducks on July 31 against the Boomers at Trustmark Park, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief while allowing two hits and one walk and striking out three.

Minaya added another scoreless inning with a strikeout out of the bullpen earlier this week on Aug. 5 against the Lake Erie Crushers.

Schaumburg starter Cole Zaffiro issued a two-out walk to Tevis Payne II in the top of the first but kept the Mud Monsters scoreless.

Minaya picked up the first out on a flyout before allowing the next two Boomers to reach on a base hit and walk.

The right-hander out of Hempstead, New York pitched his way out of the traffic on the bases to toss a scoreless first.

Hunter Belton, who was re-signed by the Mud Monsters earlier Sunday, took over in the bottom of the third to replace Minaya.

Minaya finished his first Frontier League start with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking four.

Pitching for the first time since June 2, Belton surrendered a leadoff single to Banks Tolley before striking out Kellum Clark for out number one.

Belton issued a one-out walk to put two Boomers aboard but struck out Cole Turney swinging before getting the final out on a groundout to toss a scoreless inning.

After Zaffiro tossed a scoreless top of the fourth, Belton followed with another zero in the bottom half while picking up his third strikeout.

Brayden Sanders took the ball from Belton in the bottom of the fifth, ending the Cabot, Arkansas native’s return with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out three.

The Boomers turned to their bullpen in the top of the sixth and brought in Kyle Moore.

The Schaumburg reliever ran into trouble after Payne II picked up an infield single and AJ Fritz followed with a base hit to the outfield. Up to that point, the Mud Monsters had recorded only one hit against Zaffiro.

Moore then hit Larry with a pitch to load the bases.

The next two batters, Holt and Paz, hit into fielder’s choices with Schaumburg recording force outs at home to prevent runs from scoring.

With two outs and the bases still loaded, Trey Bridges went the opposite way for a bases-clearing double, scoring Larry, Holt and Paz to put the Mud Monsters in front, 3-1.

Following Schaumburg’s six-run sixth inning, the Mud Monsters began chipping away at the four-run deficit against southpaw Tom Vincent.

Skinner picked up his first hit of the series with an infield single in the top of the seventh but was eliminated on a Kyle Booker fielder’s choice.

With one out and Booker at first, Payne II notched his second single of the day to advance Booker to third.

With Fritz batting, Vincent uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Booker to score and make it a 7-4 ballgame. On the same play, Payne II advanced into scoring position.

Fritz followed with his second base hit of the day to score Payne II and cut the deficit in half at 7-5.

Langrell continued his relief outing into the bottom of the seventh and, despite allowing two base hits, held Schaumburg scoreless to send the game to the eighth with Mississippi’s deficit still at two.

Caleb Riedel took the ball for the Boomers in the top of the ninth looking to secure the save.

Fritz blooped a single into no man’s land to lead off the inning for his third hit of the day, bringing the potential tying run aboard.

The following three batters were unable to advance him, and Riedel completed the save to secure Schaumburg’s 7-6 victory and a three-game sweep of the Mud Monsters.

Mississippi finishes the 2026 regular-season series against Schaumburg with a 2-10 record.
