Two Six-Run Innings Down Mud Monsters in 15-5 Loss to Boomers
PEARL, Miss. (Aug. 1, 2026) - Two six-run innings paired with 11 free passes sank the Mississippi Mud Monsters (28-43) in a 15-5 loss to the Schaumburg Boomers (39-32) Saturday evening.
Monster Notes
Mississippi scored in five of the first six innings, but Schaumburg’s two big frames decided the night.
- Victor Diaz finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.
- Vantrel Reed doubled twice and scored a run.
- Brayland Skinner tripled to lead off the bottom of the first and scored twice.
- Tevis Payne II drove in two runs.
- Joshua Shelly became the second Mud Monsters position player to pitch this season and tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
Williams Opens the Night
The right-hander worked around early traffic in the first inning.
Following back-to-back losses in which the Mud Monsters came within two outs and one strike of victory, Mississippi sent Brian Williams to the hill for his 15th start of the season.
The right-hander from Texas surrendered a one-out base hit to Banks Tolley and back-to-back two-out walks to Anthony Calarco and Kellum Clark to load the bases.
Williams got a ground ball to third that Vantrel Reed threw to second to pick up the inning-ending force out and hold Schaumburg scoreless.
Skinner Sparks It
Mississippi struck first in the opening inning.
In Mississippi’s first chance on offense, Brayland Skinner lined a ball down the right-field line for a triple.
Tevis Payne II followed with a groundout to score Skinner as the Mud Monsters struck first with a 1-0 lead.
Schaumburg Answers
The Boomers used a six-run second inning to move in front.
Schaumburg answered right away in the top of the second.
Will Prater began things with a leadoff double, moved to third on a flyout to center field and came across on a sacrifice fly by Christian Fedko.
Williams allowed the next two men to reach with a walk to Alec Craig and a single by Tolley.
Cole Smith followed by blooping a single into shallow right field that landed between second baseman Samil De La Rosa and right fielder Payne II.
Craig scored on the play to give Schaumburg a 2-1 lead.
Calarco followed by lining a ball into right-center field to score both runners and make it 4-1 Boomers.
Clark extended the lead with a two-run home run onto the roof of the Farm Bureau Grill, giving Schaumburg a 6-1 advantage.
Mississippi Keeps Scoring
The Mud Monsters answered in the second, third and fourth innings.
Mississippi scored in a second consecutive inning in the bottom of the second after Trey Bridges went the opposite way for a single into left field and stole second base.
Vantrel Reed moved Bridges to third on a groundout and, with two outs, Slater Schield notched an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Mississippi continued chipping into Schaumburg’s advantage, scoring in a third straight inning after Payne II drew a one-out walk and De La Rosa singled to put two Mud Monsters aboard.
A fly ball by Karell Paz was deep enough to move Payne II to third before Victor Diaz plated him with a single through the left side to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.
After Williams tossed a second consecutive scoreless frame, the Mud Monsters bats picked up right where they left off.
Reed doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth and moved to third on a one-out groundout by Skinner.
Booker followed by grounding a ball to Smith, who made a throwing error, allowing Booker to reach and Reed to score to make it a 6-4 game.
Another Six-Run Frame
Schaumburg broke the game open again in the fifth.
Tristan House entered in the top of the fifth to take the ball from Williams, who finished his day going four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out three.
House walked the first batter he faced, Prater, who stole second base.
On a full-count offering from House, Jeff Nicol homered into the Mud Monsters bullpen for his second of the series to make it an 8-4 Schaumburg advantage.
With the bases cleared, Fedko singled to reach, Craig walked and Tolley singled home a run.
Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to record his second RBI of the day and push Schaumburg into double digits with a 10-4 lead.
A walk to Calarco followed to put two men on before Clark singled to load the bases.
House was then called for a balk before facing Kyle Fitzgerald, allowing Tolley to score.
Fitzgerald grounded out to Schield at short to score the sixth and final run of the inning, giving Schaumburg a 12-4 lead.
Payne II Adds Another
Mississippi scored for the fifth time in six innings.
Mississippi attempted to answer in the bottom half of the inning after Paz reached with one out on a hit-by-pitch.
Diaz followed with his second hit of the day before being erased on the bases on a fielder’s choice by Bridges.
On the same play, Paz advanced to third with two outs, but the Mud Monsters were held scoreless.
Gage Bihm replaced House on the mound in the top of the sixth and, despite allowing a two-out walk, recorded the final out of the inning with a strikeout of Tolley.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Skinner skied a fly ball into shallow right field that second baseman Smith dropped, allowing Skinner to reach on an error.
During the next at-bat, Schaumburg reliever Tanner Shears, who entered in relief of starter Ross Thompson at the start of the inning, committed a balk to move Skinner to second.
Payne II followed with a single to score Skinner for the second time on the evening, making it a 12-5 ballgame.
Boomers Add Three
Nicol’s two-run double capped the final Schaumburg rally.
Bihm continued his outing into the top of the seventh. After recording the first out of the frame, the next three Boomers reached to load the bases after back-to-back walks to Calarco and Clark and a single by Fitzgerald.
Prater then lifted a deep fly ball to center field, allowing Calarco to tag and score to put Schaumburg back up by eight runs at 13-5.
After Bihm got ahead of Nicol with two strikes, the Schaumburg catcher crushed a two-run double off the wall in left-center field to make it 15-5.
Reed picked up a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, but Mississippi was held scoreless.
Shelly Takes the Mound
The position player delivered a scoreless ninth inning.
Bihm remained on the hill in the top of the eighth and, despite allowing two men aboard, posted a scoreless frame.
After the Mud Monsters were retired in the bottom of the eighth, Mississippi sent Joshua Shelly to the mound.
Shelly became the second Mud Monsters position player to pitch this season, joining AJ Fritz, and tossed a scoreless top of the ninth while picking up a strikeout for the second out of the inning.
Aaron Glickstein took the mound for Schaumburg looking to close out the game.
Diaz recorded his third hit of the day with a one-out single, but Glickstein retired the final two batters to secure the 15-5 victory for Schaumburg.
